EMMA

Making herbal tea : a sensory experience from seed to cup

CONTEXT

As part of a sensory design course, I developed a project based on three randomly drawn words.

My words were: WORK, ANXIETY, and NATURAL.

The objective was to design a solution addressing a challenge that connects these three themes.

INSIGHTS

1. Hands-on, tangible work reinforces sensory grounding and presence, which can help counter anxiety (a “meaningful” activity).

2. Exposure to natural elements reduces perceived stress and physiological stress markers.

3. Awareness of being part of a natural cycle in one’s activities promotes a sense of calm.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

" How can work be transformed into a living, cyclical experience, where engagement with natural elements becomes a sensory ritual capable of reducing anxiety and restoring a sense of presence and well-being ? "

IDEATION

I imagined Emma, a complete tea kit, from growing the plants to brewing them in a cup, offering a sensory and meditative experience that reconnects with nature and reduces anxiety.

MATERIALS

I built a sensory profile for each material and plant, along with a semiotic analysis of each.

These profiles include tactile, visual, olfactory, gustatory, and symbolic properties. The analyses guided a coherent selection of materials to shape Emma.

USER
SCENARIO

Sow the seed and nurture the growth.

Harvest the leaves, then let them dry in the designated holder.

Crush the dried leaves with the pestle in the stone bowl.

Bag the leaves according to your desired blends, then enjoy the result !
